Dude: a lightweight word denoting attention to fashion and a devotion to "cool,".
It's definitely gendered and hence its application to women could be considered sexist.
Some trace the term to "duds" - referencing clothing, although there does seem to be a resemblance to "dud", as in failure to denonate (!) or succeed.
Someone believed the term to originate as an extra, unfunctioning part of a horse's ass, but I have the feeling there was just a wee bit of confusion with the idiom of calling someone "a horse's ass".
